Before you decide

On the forest side the brief flips from glare to damp and winter cold — the guide covers why honeycomb cellular blinds usually make more sense here than heavy blockout. Read the Hout Bay Light, Wind & Salt Playbook →

On this side the problem is not glare

Everywhere else in the valley the conversation starts with too much light. Up against the tree line the opposite is usually true. Houses tucked under the canopy on the forest edge get filtered, indirect light for much of the day, and rooms on the shaded elevations can feel cold and dim even in a Cape summer. Specifying a heavy blockout across those windows out of habit is the most common mistake made here: it solves a problem the room does not have and takes away daylight the room badly needs.

The sensible starting point is a high-openness sunscreen or a light-filtering weave on the shaded elevations, so privacy is handled without surrendering what daylight there is, and true blockout kept for bedrooms only. Where a room is genuinely gloomy, an aluminium venetian tilted upward is often better than any fabric, because it throws the available light onto the ceiling and pushes it deeper into the room instead of simply cutting it down.

Damp, cold glass and what it means for fabric

The forest side holds its moisture. Winter mornings sit heavy, mist lingers longer than it does over the water, and the temperature difference across a pane of glass is enough to run condensation down it. That has practical consequences for a blind. A fabric that is pushed hard against cold, wet glass and left down for weeks does not dry properly, and over a wet winter that is how marking and mildew start.

Two habits fix it and cost nothing. Lift the blinds fully on the dry days and let the reveal breathe, and choose materials that shrug off a damp room where you can — powder-coated aluminium slats in bathrooms, kitchens and any room that stays cold, rather than a fabric that will hold what it absorbs. On the insulation question, a cellular blind with its air-cell structure does more for a cold forest-side room than a thick blockout does, because it traps a layer of still air at the glass rather than simply blocking the view of it.

Outdoors, and the honest limits

Covered patios on this side are used differently: less about wind and more about keeping pollen, leaf litter and drizzle out of a space that sits in shade. Channel-guided screens do that well, and a clear panel makes a covered stoep usable through a wet July. The honest caution is about storage — nothing outdoors here should be rolled away wet if it can be helped, because a damp roll in a damp climate is the shortest route to a stained fabric. And any timber fitted on this side wants to stay well away from the bathroom, whatever the rest of the house is finished in.
